Walk into any lumberyard and ask for a 2×4×8. You'll get a board that measures 1-1/2 inches thick, 3-1/2 inches wide, and 8 feet long. The name on the tag says one thing; your tape measure says another. It isn't a scam — it's history, physics, and a century of compromise.
Softwood Construction Lumber (the Everyday Stuff)
These are the boards you use for framing walls, building shelves, or knocking together a workbench. The names are nominal — the old rough-sawn sizes. The actual dimensions are what you measure after drying and planing.

Lengths are true — an 8-foot board really is 8 feet long. Only the thickness and width get reduced.
Hardwood Quarter Thicknesses
Hardwood is sold differently: by "quarters" of an inch of rough thickness. You pay for the rough size; the board you take home is thinner after it's surfaced.

When you're calculating board feet or estimating cost, always use the rough (nominal) thickness. That's what the yard charges you for.
How We Ended Up with a 1-1/2 × 3-1/2 "2×4"
A hundred years ago a 2×4 really was 2 inches by 4 inches when it left the sawmill — rough, green, and full of water. Then two things happened:
- Drying — Wood shrinks as the moisture leaves.
- Planing — The rough surfaces get smoothed, removing more material.
Early mills each decided for themselves how much to take off. A board from Georgia and a board from Oregon could differ by a quarter-inch when they both arrived at the same Chicago yard. Once railroads created a national market, that variation became a real problem.
Standards arrived in waves. The first American Lumber Standards came in 1924. After decades of back-and-forth between mills (who wanted to ship less wood) and builders (who wanted more wood), the size we live with today was locked in during 1964: a dry, surfaced 2×4 measures 1-1/2″ × 3-1/2″. Every stick of dimensional lumber since then is a fossil of that compromise.
People still get confused enough to sue over it. In 2017, class-action lawsuits claimed that labeling 4×4s as "4×4" was deceptive. The courts dismissed the cases — nominal sizing is the published, legal standard. The confusion is real, though, which is exactly why this page exists.
Remodeling an Older House? Measure Twice
Homes framed before the mid-1960s often contain true-dimension or in-between sizes — full 2-inch studs, joists that measure 1-3/4″ × 9-1/2″, and other sizes that no longer exist. That's why sistering a modern 2×10 next to an old joist leaves a step. Matching old framing usually means shimming or having stock custom-milled. Never assume the era. Put a tape measure on the existing lumber before you buy anything new.
Modern Lumber Is Different Wood, Too
Size isn't the only change. Old framing lumber came from slow-grown, old-growth trees. Count the growth rings on an antique joist and you might see 20 rings per inch. Modern plantation trees are harvested in a few decades and often show only 4 rings per inch, with wider, softer earlywood bands, more knots, and pith running through the center of many boards.
It still meets the engineering specifications, but it is lighter, moves more with changes in humidity, and holds nails differently. That's one big reason engineered lumber (LVL beams, I-joists, and their cousins) took over the longer spans.
Pressure-Treated Lumber: Buy It Wet, Expect It to Shrink
Treated lumber adds one more wrinkle. It is sold saturated with waterborne preservative — sometimes still dripping. A treated 2×6 deck board can shrink ³⁄₁₆″ in width as it dries in place. Experienced deck builders often install the boards tight and let the drying create the drainage gaps.
Check the tag, not just the shelf sign. "Ground contact" boards carry roughly twice the preservative of "above ground" stock. Anything that will touch soil or stay wet needs the higher rating. The green boards get a full field guide of their own.
When you're planning a project, enter the rough (nominal) dimensions into the planner so the numbers match what the lumberyard will actually charge you. The finished sizes are what you build with. The nominal sizes are what you pay for.
That's the whole story of the 2×4 — and every other piece of dimensional lumber. Once you understand the gap between the name and the tape measure, the lumberyard stops feeling like a place that is trying to trick you.
