The table saw: kickback is geometry, not bad luck
The most useful machine in the shop is also the one that fills the most emergency-room paperwork — tens of thousands of blade-contact injuries a year in the U.S. by CPSC staff estimates, thousands of them amputations. Almost every one follows the same few geometric mistakes.

A table saw does exactly one thing: it spins a blade in one direction, forever. Both ways it hurts people — touching the blade, and being hit by what the blade throws — come from that one rotation meeting the wrong geometry. Learn the geometry and the machine gets dramatically more boring, which is the goal.
How kickback actually works
The front of the blade — the side facing you — cuts downward into the wood and presses it onto the table. That part is safe by design. The back of the same blade is doing the opposite: its teeth are rising out of the table at full speed. Kickback is what happens when the workpiece touches those rising rear teeth: the blade lifts the board, grabs it, and throws it back at you — fast, and at roughly chest height. It happens in a blink, far faster than any reaction.
What brings a board into the rear teeth? The kerf closing as internal tension releases, the board drifting away from the fence mid-cut, or a piece trapped between blade and fence with nowhere to go. All three are blocked by one part:
The riving knife — the curved steel fin sitting just behind the blade, rising and tilting with it — exists purely to keep wood off those rising teeth. It holds the kerf open and stops the board from rotating into the back of the blade. New saws have shipped with one for roughly the last fifteen years, and it works with nearly every cut, including non-through cuts.
The fence and the miter gauge never work together
Rip cuts ride the fence. Crosscuts ride the miter gauge (or a sled). Using both at once — crosscutting with the end of the board against the fence — traps the offcut in the triangle between blade, fence, and gauge, and the blade throws whatever gets trapped. If you need a repeatable crosscut length, clamp a stop block to the fence ahead of the blade, so the piece is free by the time it meets the teeth.
Where your body goes
Kickback travels in the plane of the blade. Standing a half step to the side of that line costs nothing and turns a chest hit into a near miss — make it your default stance. The rest of the body rules are just as simple:
- Hands never cross the blade line while it spins. The far side of the blade is a different country; visit it after spin-down.
- Rips narrower than about 6″ get a push stick — it should be in your hand before the cut starts, not fetched mid-cut.
- Feed all the way through and past the blade. A cut abandoned halfway, with the board still touching a spinning blade, is a kickback waiting for a reason.
Flesh-sensing saws, stated plainly
Saws with flesh-detection brakes (SawStop and successors) sense skin contact electrically and stop the blade within milliseconds, trading a destroyed blade and brake cartridge for a nick instead of an amputation. The technology does what it claims. Two honest caveats: it does nothing about kickback — the geometry above still applies in full — and it isn't a license to relax the hand rules. Think of it as an airbag: you still steer.
The saw's geometry never changes, so the defenses don't change either: the riving knife stays on, every cut gets exactly one guide, the push stick is in your hand before the blade spins, and your feet stay out of the throw line. Make those four part of how you set up each cut — settled in advance, not re-decided every time — and the saw treats you the same on your worst day as on your best.
