The drill press: the helicopter problem
The drill press is the machine nobody fears, and that's its trick. It has no exposed blade and no throw line — just a geared-down motor with enormous twisting force, waiting for the moment a bit grabs and turns the board you were holding into a propeller.

Here's the physics you're negotiating with: the press's pulleys trade speed for torque, so even a modest bench-top model twists harder than any human grip. When a bit binds — in a knot, at breakthrough, or the instant a big Forstner's rim engages — all that torque transfers to the workpiece instantly. A hand loses that contest every time; the board spins, and its corners become a blur at knuckle height. Shop veterans call it the helicopter, and everyone who's seen one remembers it.
Clamp, or brace against the column
For long boards there's a free alternative: position the work so its left end rests against the press's column. If the bit grabs, the column — not your hand — takes the torque: seen from above the bit turns clockwise and drives the work the same way, so the left end swings backward, straight into the column, and stops. That habit costs nothing and works even on the quick holes clamps get skipped for.
Speed follows diameter
Inside the pulley cover is a chart matching spindle speed to bit size and material, and it isn't decoration. Big bits need slow speeds — the rim of a 2″ Forstner at a twist bit's 3,000 rpm is moving ten times faster than its center, burning the wood and far more likely to grab. As a rough guide: small twist bits run fast, Forstners and hole saws run at a few hundred rpm, and metal runs slower than wood at every diameter.
Breakthrough and backing
The grabbiest moment of any hole is the exit, when the last fibers stop resisting and the bit's screw-like geometry tries to pull itself — and the work — up the flutes. Ease the feed pressure as the bit approaches the far face, and put a scrap backer board under the workpiece: it supports the exit fibers (no blowout), gives the bit somewhere harmless to land, and keeps the steel table off your cutting edges.
The chuck key and the spinning things
And because the spindle is exactly the rotating shaft the basics article warns about: sleeves snug, hair up, gloves off, jewelry in the tray. A drill press winds in whatever brushes it, at wrist height, right where cuffs and bracelets live. Brush away chips with a stick or brush after spin-down — long drilling curls (especially in metal) are sharp enough to cut you.
The whole discipline is four things: a clamp or the column, the right belt groove, a soft touch at breakthrough, and a key that lives in your hand. They cost nothing, and together they cover nearly every way this quiet, strong machine hurts people.
